Climate

Hungary's climate is mild and lacks extremes: In summer, around 30 degrees (Celsius) is normal mostly with sunny weather. Winter is mild with around 0 degrees but the most beautiful seasons are spring in the time of blossoming and autumn, during September and October which is still sunny and the forests are extremely beautiful at that time. Budapest has 1928 hours of sunshine per year which is more than 25% than most North-Western European cities! (London 1410, Munich 1709, Brussels 1546, Amsterdam 1662 for the comparison) Source. Same goes for the rain: in Brussels it rains 50% more and in Zurich or Munich double as much as in Budapest (source).

Location

Hungary is in the heart of Europe with excellent accessibility: a flight takes about 2 hours from the UK and about an hour from Germany. There are several cheap flights available from the Netherlands, Belgium and Scandinavia as well. From Munich you can get there by train in 6 hours 30 minutes and you would pay 30-40 EUR. From the west side of the country you can get to lake Balaton below an hour but the Croatian beaches and the Austrian ski pistes are also within 2 hours of reach!

Price

It is a well-known fact that the new EU countries are way cheaper than the Western-European ones. But how much cheaper? Well, in Budapest, which is the most expensive part of the country, you need about half the money you need in Munich or Amsterdam. If you compare it with London, Zurich or Scandinavia, you can go down to 30% of your current spending or even less (Source). The difference mainly comes from the property prices and the services. Cinema, sports, restaurants are all much cheaper than in Western Europe and the quality is the same or even better sometimes.

Services

Hungary is establishing its reputation as a healthcare capital. This is due to the numerous spas all over the country and recently the dental and wellness tourism is increasing rapidly. On top of this, the infrastructure is now being competitive to the West; everything is available, just like it is at home-for a lower price.

Food & drink

Due to its sunny climate, Hungary has been an agricultural land during the centuries. This still has traces up to now. One can grow apricots, plums, peaches, corn, watermelon, tomato among others. And the best thing: Half of the country counts as wine regions! There is really good quality wine can be made, even by you in your own wineyard. The gastronomy is also great so make sure you go frequently hiking or swimming in Hungary to be kept in a good shape!

Leisure and culture

The country is well known for its two major rivers (the Danube and the Tisza) and it's lakes (Balaton, Fertö tó, Velencei-tó) which is offering a wide range of water-sports, as windsurfing, sailing, kayak-canoe, swimming, etc. Hiking is also popular, just as horse-riding and golf. In Hungary there is no dog-tax and as the land is cheap, you can buy a property with a big garden which is suitable for your pet. In Budapest the cultural life is very versatile and there are different themed festivals all year long (classical music, theater, arts, poetry, etc.)

Budapest

This city is an absolute stunner. Called also as the Pearl of the Danube, it was chosen in the top 25 destinations worldwide in 2015 by Tripadvisor (source). Divided by the river Danube, it has a vibe like no other city in the world: You can feel the atmosphere of history through the monuments from the Hungarian Kingdom, Turkish, Austria-Hungary, Soviet and the modern times. Its musical and theater scene is exceptional, not to mention the open-air festivals and concerts all summer long.
